Portsmouth Regional Hospital's Charity Care and Financial Discount Policy

The Goal

We know that especially today, when so many people are uninsured, the process of paying for one’s medical care can be difficult. As part of our ongoing commitment to care, Portsmouth Regional Hospital works hard to help our patients address any financial responsibilities they may have for their medical treatment in a way that is fair and sensitive to their circumstances. We have instituted a program designed to help those who find themselves in financial distress.

Program Overview

We first provide financial counseling to help patients gain access to government sources of medical assistance including Medicaid, Health Kids and other local, state and federal programs. Our financial counselors provide support and assistance to all of our patients, helping them understand their existing health care plans, providing guidance to maximize patient benefits, discuss payment options, and/or apply for financial assistance that may be available.

We offer 3 Financial Assistance Programs for those patients that may need help meeting their health care costs:

HCA Charity Care Policy

This program provides financial relief to patients who qualify based on a comparison of their financial resources and/or income to the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Specifically, the plan provides free care for any patient who receives nonelective treatment and whose household financial resources and/or income is at 200 percent or below the Federal Poverty Level. This is a single case by case program.

NH Health Access

This is a program offered by a network of affiliated hospitals and providers working together to improve access to health care for uninsured, and under insured residents of the State of New Hampshire. By completing one application, if you are qualified to participate in this program, assistance will remain in effect, and apply to future medical visits at participating facilities, and providers for up to 12 months. You will receive an ID card showing your acceptance into the program, and the level of assistance available to you.

Our staff is able to determine the most appropriate program for your set of circumstances, as well as assist in providing and completing the application and screening process. In some instances, additional income and resource verification information will be required. Information regarding the policy is readily available in emergency departments of any HCA hospital.

Please call (603)334-2087 to obtain a Financial Assistance Application and/or obtain additional information regarding these programs.

Uninsured Discount Program

Additionally, HCA has created an uninsured discount program. This program provides the uninsured who do not qualify for Medicaid, Charity or any other discount program the facility offers, a managed care like discount.

For any remaining balance, we will work with the patient to establish an appropriate payment plan based on the amount due and the patient’s financial status. However, it is important to recognize that patients must work with our financial counselors by providing financial information that is essential to enable us to offer discounts and other financial relief.
