The annual Billy Cheverie Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Portsmouth Regional Hospital has been one of the largest and most successful fundraising and sporting events on the Seacoast. To date the Tournament has raised over $1,300,000 which has been donated to local charities and provided scholarships to graduating high school students.
This year’s tournament which will be held at the Ledges Golf Club in York, Maine, will be the final one, say his parents, Harry and Barbara Cheverie of York. “When we started the tournament, we made a commitment for 20 years, “says Mr. Cheverie, Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s Controller. “We’ve achieved that and we feel it is time to end it.” He adds, “Barbara and I will continue the Billy Cheverie Memorial Scholarships”.
Billy Cheverie picked up his first golf club at age eight and essentially never stopped playing. There was never a question that he looked forward to a career as a professional golfer. A week before his untimely death he was named Player of the Week for the State of Maine—not among golfers but among all high school athletes in the State of Maine. He was on the golf course when he died of an undiagnosed heart problem.
The Cheverie Memorial Golf Tournament has benefitted Seacoast non-profit organizations, including Families First, Crossroads, Betty’s Dream, Seacoast Big Brother/Big Sisters, A Safe Place, The Salvation Army, and the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition.
This year’s Billy Cheverie Memorial Golf Tournament will be held June 18th. For further information about playing in the tournament or becoming a sponsor please call (603) 433-4056
