Donato A Sisto, MD, FACS

Son of a decorated WWII nurse and a police officer, Donato wanted to be a doctor from the age of 10.

He enrolled in medical school at 18, the year in which the first heart transplant was performed.  Exposed to great mentors and pioneers in the fields of cardiac surgery, Donato decided to pursue the specialty and moved to the U.S.A.  He landed in the Bronx, where he trained in surgery and cardiothoracic surgery.  There he studied procedures to treat heart valve pathology, heart failure, and complex heart conditions.  He stayed on as staff of the Albert Einstein Council of Medicine, reaching the level of Associated Professor, teaching residents and medical students.  He developed surgical procedures for valve repair and treatment of end-stage heart disease.  Recruited in 1998 to develop a new open heart surgery program in Portsmouth, he has performed procedures to treat ischemic and valvular heart disease, combining innovation with great outcomes in cardiac surgery to the Seacoast.  He is married to Joan, a very successful dermatologist, and they have 2 children together, Alex and Kathryn.
