It’s essential to remember that the surgical procedure is only one part of the weight-loss process. A 20-member team of surgeons, internists, psychologists, nurses, nutritionists, physical and occupations therapists, social workers and others works to help you prepare for your procedure and support you in your new, changed lifestyle. We work closely with your primary care physician – the clinician who knows you best.

The most essential member of our team is you, the patient. Success requires your commitment to working hard to maintain your health and keep excess weight from returning.

When patients first come to the program they’re tested for a range of health issues – liver and kidney function, diabetes, stomach ulcers, gallbladder problems, hypertension and other issues.

Beyond this, they’re assessed psychologically and educated about behavior modification, physical therapy and nutrition. Patients proceeding with the program are required to lose a certain percent of their excess body weight through diet and exercise – usually about 10 to 15 pounds.

Problems like alcoholism and other substance-abuse issues, impaired liver function and similar problems are contraindications, as is, obviously, active pregnancy.
