Brain Surgery
Brain Surgery
Whether for head injuries, strokes, brain tumors or aneurysms, surgical intervention in the body’s most complex and fragile organ requires special skills and resources. Portsmouth Regional Hospital is singular in having a full-service brain surgery program, a relatively uncommon capability that requires advanced resources from throughout an entire institution. Portsmouth’s program is the largest and most experienced brain surgery program in the Seacoast Region, bringing together the skills not just of neurosurgeons but neurologists, emergency medicine and intensive care specialists, radiologists and others. A collaborative approach and a commitment to advanced resources ensure the best outcomes possible.
PRH’s Brain Surgery Capabilities Encompass:
- Benign Brain Tumors
- Metastatic Brain Tumors
- Malignant Brain Tumors
- Image-Guided Cranial Surgery
- Hydrocephalus
- Aneurysms
- Colloid Cysts of the 3rd Ventricle
- Traumatic Brain Injury/Head Injury
- Chiari Type 1 Malformations
Advanced Skills, Resources
PRH’s five fellowship-trained, board-certified neurosurgeons represent a combined 90 years of experience in evaluating and treating brain disorders. They have access at Portsmouth to such resources as BrainLab (the most advanced surgical microscope available), the Camino (a fiberoptic device for monitoring intracranial brain pressure) and Image-Guided Cranial Surgery (a stereotactic digital system that offers enhanced safety and accuracy).
Radiology Department support includes such measures as high-density MRI and CT scanning to provide detailed roadmaps to tumor or injury locations and CT angiography to visualize arterial blood flow. PRH is the only hospital in the Seacoast equipped with dedicated neurosurgical ultrasound technology for life-saving emergency interventions. Patient rehabilitation is supported by physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists in the Neuroscience Day Rehabilitation Program.
