Excellence in Breast Health

Getting your recommended screenings is one of the most important ways to take care of your health. At Portsmouth Regional Hospital, we make this easy and comfortable with a range of breast health services and convenient hours.

Breast Screening Services

Our Breast Center, located at 155 Borthwick Avenue, offers advanced technology for early detection. Our center, designed by women for women, offers privacy and warmth, plus expanded evening and Saturday hours for many services for your convenience.

Digital 3D Mammography

A screening mammography is the best way to find breast cancer early—and the earlier it's diagnosed, the more likely it can be treated effectively. We were first in the Seacoast region to offer digital mammography, and now offer the latest breast imaging technology - 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis.

3D mammography helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. 3D mammography benefits all screening and diagnostic mammography patients, and is especially valuable for women receiving a baseline screening, those who have dense breast tissue and women with a personal history of breast cancer.
During a 3D mammography exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

By offering women the latest technology in mammography, Portsmouth Regional Hospital hopes to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

Our mammography center is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology, and all of our mammography technologists are women with special training and certification.

Breast Ultrasound and MRI

If potential abnormalities are detected during a mammogram, you may have a breast ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ultrasound, also called sonography, is a method of viewing tissues using high-frequency sound waves. The results of ultrasound screening are usually available the same day.

Breast MRI uses magnetic fields to create two- and three-dimensional pictures of tissue, providing a more in-depth look if needed. Portsmouth offers 3.0 Tesla MRI, an innovation that produces high-resolution images in a more spacious environment than the closer confines of a traditional MRI system.

Breast Biopsy: MRI, Ultrasound and Stereotactic

If further testing is needed, your doctor may order a breast biopsy, where cells are drawn from tissue and analyzed in a lab. You'll benefit from the most precise techniques available, including MRI- and ultrasound-guided biopsy and stereotactic breast biopsy. These techniques result in minimal scarring and involve less pain and time.
