Venous Reflux Examination of the Legs
What is a venous reflux examination?
Venous reflux examination is a test ordered by your physician to check the competency of the veins in your legs as well as the valves within those veins. This test is usually ordered due to discomfort from varicose veins.
What can I expect before the test?
There is no preparation for the examination.
What can I expect during the test?
You will be asked to report to the Heart and Lung Center at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
You will be asked to report 15 minutes early for registration.
A qualified technologist will perform your exam.
You will be asked to remove your pants and shoes.
You will be given a hospital johnny to put on.
The technologist will ask you to stand during the examination if at all possible.
The technologist will obtain information for the physician utilizing an ultrasound probe covered with gel. This probe will be moved up and down each leg.
A blood pressure cuff will be placed on certain locations on each leg. The cuff will be inflated only enough to cause the venous blood to back up slightly. It will then be released quickly. The technologist will obtain the information during the release.
The technologist may be requested to test both legs.
How long will the test take?
The length of the exam will depend on whether the doctor wants one or both legs tested. The examination takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes per leg.
What can I expect after the test?
You can return to your normal activities after the exam.
The results will be forwarded to your physician, who will discuss them with you at a later date.
