Hospitalist Care
Hospitalist Care
Many physicians on the Portsmouth Regional Hospital medical staff work in tandem with our Hospitalist team when admitting their patients for an overnight stay. We introduced this new specialty in early 2006, as part of our ongoing effort to continually improve patient safety and quality of care.

A Hospitalist is an Inpatient Care Specialist
A Hospitalist is a relatively new medical specialty that has evolved as hospital-based care has become more complex and sophisticated. Hospitalists are doctors who specialize in caring for patients in the hospital and who usually do not have an outpatient medical practice.
What are the Benefits of Hospitalist Care?
When admitting their patients to the hospital for an overnight stay, many primary care physicians refer their patients to our Hospitalist team so that they can benefit from the attention and expertise of hospital-based doctors whose full-time focus is inpatient care.
Nationwide studies show that Hospitalists can improve the quality of care, increase patient comfort, improve communication with the patient's family and caregivers and minimize the time the patient needs to stay in the hospital.
Close Communication With the Referring Physician
Referring a patient to the Hospitalist team is similar to what a doctor does when referring their patient to a specialist. During the patient's hospital stay, the Hospitalist and primary care physician may talk further regarding the patient's treatment. Upon discharge, they communicate with one another about further treatment needs, follow-up care and medications. The Hospitalist also sends the patient's hospital records to the primary care physician.
Hospitalists Answer the Family's Questions
Hospitalists are here to provide the answers in person whenever possible. Since Hospitalists are always in the hospital, they are usually able to spend more time talking to patients and their families.
Please visit the Find a Physician section of this Web site to meet our Hospitalist team.
