Portsmouth Regional Hospital Bariatric Surgeons’ proven record of favorable outcomes has resulted in the designation of Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and Surgical Review Corporation.
Portsmouth Regional Hospital Bariatric Center was accredited as a Level 1 facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons Centers of Excellence Program.

Obesity has become the #1 public health problem in our country today -- more than half of Americans are overweight and roughly 12 million Americans have severe obesity (defined as being 100 lbs. or more overweight). Obesity is a major cause of premature death and many other serious medical conditions.
To the outside world, losing excessive weight is about self-image. To the obese patient, it’s most of all about health. Obesity significantly increases the risk of life-threatening problems as diverse as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and sleep apnea. Obesity stimulates many quality-of-life disorders, such as osteoarthritis and acid reflux.
Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s weight-loss surgery program is here to support you in your struggle to escape these perils. Bariatric surgery involves much more than just a surgical procedure. A significant program of screening, education and behavior modification takes place prior to surgery to prepare you for your new lifestyle, and education and counseling efforts continue long afterwards.
Incorporating surgeons, nurses, a psychologist, therapists and others, our multispecialty team has helped more than 900 patients from throughout the Seacoast achieve weight loss and dramatically improved their health with
minimally invasive gastric bypass, lap-band and gastric sleeve procedures.
Our success rates are very high and our program has been designated a Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery by both the American College of Surgeons and American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (Weight-loss surgery is also called Bariatric Surgery from the Greek word for weight. The terms are used interchangeably).
