What is a Trauma Center?

Portsmouth Hospital is the only accredited ACS Level II Trauma Center in NH

Portsmouth Regional Hospital is a designated Level II Trauma Center by the State of New Hampshire and verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). In order to receive trauma center verification, a hospital must meet rigorous criteria as defined by the state as well as the American College of Surgeons in the areas of emergency department facilities, operating room services and prompt availability of medical care in numerous specialties, such as trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics and critical care. As the only ASC Level II Trauma Center in NH, we’re equipped to handle the most critical emergencies. From motor vehicle accidents to falls, we stand ready to help patients from our region.

Support for Serious Emergencies

If you are critically ill or injured, our specially trained medical professionals with specialized equipment converge at your bedside as soon as you arrive in the ER. We deliver care immediately; with a rapid and systematic protocol that ensures you receive the critical attention you need as quickly as possible.

With traumatic injury, saving time is crucial. Portsmouth Regional Hospital is designed to quickly care for severely injured patients and increase chances of survival.

We offer:

  • Access to emergency treatment across our region
  • Located right off of I-95, and Route 16 for convenient access
  • A helipad located directly outside of the ER to provide rapid response time
  • Designated trauma rooms located directly inside ambulance entrance
  • Critical care unit, surgical suites and imaging located next to ER for rapid access to diagnosis and treatment

Trauma care begins with area first responders. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) makes split-second, life-saving decisions when transferring patients to Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s ER. We work closely with our EMS partners to provide care before patients arrive so our highly-trained trauma staff stands ready for critical emergencies.

Designation as a Level II Trauma Center certifies that Portsmouth Regional Hospital has the resources to deal with severely injured patients on a round-the-clock basis. To earn this coveted distinction, Portsmouth Regional Hospital had to demonstrate a critical mass of resources, support systems and complex processes. That’s why only a limited number of trauma centers have been designated in the State of NH. Studies have shown the more experience the staff has with high-risk surgical situations; the better the patient’s chances are for survival.

Physician Expertise

Our trauma surgeons and physicians are on site 24/7 to provide the highest level of life-saving care. Your care team includes:

A dedicated team of board-certified trauma surgeons is on site 24/7. The immediate availability of a trauma surgeon in the Emergency Department allows Portsmouth Regional Hospital to provide the most immediate and complex care often required by someone suffering from major trauma. Upon receipt of the pre-hospital report from the first responders, the trauma team is activated. Within minutes a skilled team of caregivers awaits the arrival of the trauma patient.
A dedicated anesthesiologist is on site 24/7 to provide emergent surgical team care in the operating room. In conjunction with the trauma surgeon, this level of expertise and availability allows expedited operating room care for the most severely injured patients.
Dedicated neurosurgeons are available to care for traumatic brain injuries and life threatening neurosurgical emergencies.
Specialized Trauma Orthopedic Surgeons are available to care for severe injuries to the musculoskeletal system, such as fractures and crush injuries.
A dedicated team of physicians provide medical care to the complex intensive care unit patient population.
In addition to the key team members, additional highly specialized surgeons are available to meet the needs of the uniquely injured trauma patient. These include: Thoracic and Vascular Surgeons, Hand Surgeons, Oral –Maxillary-Facial Surgeons, ENT, OB/GYN, Ophthalmologists, Plastic Surgeons and Urologists.
Hospital support services including Radiology, Laboratory, Respiratory Therapy, Case Management, Social Workers, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Registered Dietitians, and Pharmacists are all on hand to provide the most comprehensive care available.
