Varicose Vein Surgery

Varicose Vein Surgery

A new treatment for varicose veins is being offered at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. The new procedure requires the use of a device called VNUS, which is used to shrink the blood vessel.

The VNUS device is less invasive than the conventional "vein stripping" method. Vein stripping is the removal of swollen blood vessels, which can cause pain and discomfort. Since the VNUS method does not require the removal of vessels, there is a shorter recovery time.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, sixty percent of all Americans suffer from vein disorders. Women are at most risk, with an estimated forty-one percent developing varicose and/or spider veins by the age of fifty.

Varicose veins occur most often in the veins that run from the ankle to the groin. Symptoms include aches in the leg, pain along the vein, sharp or dull pain, itching or burning sensations.
