Why is Weight Loss Surgery Effective?

There’s never a shortage of fad diets and weight loss medications. But statistically, some 90 percent of dieters gain back their lost weight. Bariatric surgery is considered a successful approach to significant weight loss for a number of reasons:

  • It’s a permanent change that gives people both motivation and a sense of control over their bodies and their eating habits.
  • Bariatric surgery has been cited by the Surgeon General, the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization as the most effective way for morbidly obese people to lose significant weight permanently.
  • Some 95 percent of bariatric surgery patients at Portsmouth Regional Hospital lose 50 percent of their excess weight and 85 percent of them lose at least 75 percent. Almost all patients report a markedly improved quality of life.
  • Not only do most patients who choose bariatric surgery lose significant weight, co-morbidities like diabetes, heart disease and stoke are cured or dramatically improved in up to 90 percent of cases. Gastric reflux and sleep apnea often disappear altogether, urinary stress incontinence is resolved in up to 95 percent of cases, and arthritic pain is improved in 85 percent of patients.
  • Evidence suggests that weight loss lowers the risk of some cancers that are increased in morbid obesity, including breast, endometrial, colon and prostate cancers.
