Portsmouth Regional Hospital named among America's 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery

Portsmouth Regional Hospital (PRH) has been named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery, putting it in the top 2% of cardiac surgery programs in the country, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. This distinction, along with numerous other accolades from Healthgrades including being named a top 250 hospital in the country, reflects Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s outstanding clinical performance and distinguishes it as one of the country’s leading hospitals.

Other accolades from Healthgrades include being the recipient of the Healthgrades 2024 Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award and being a 5-star recipient for coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery, and the treatment of heart attack, two years in a row.

“The awards and recognitions for our cardiovascular surgery program continue to roll in, which is a testament to the commitment to high-quality patient care that our team demonstrates every day,” said Dean M. Carucci, chief executive officer of Portsmouth Regional Hospital. “And we’re not slowing down. With a new hybrid cardiovascular operating room in progress, as well as other technological advances, we continue to move forward in our pursuit of excellence for cardiac surgery, as well as all of our service lines.”

Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and complications.  By focusing on what matters most — patient outcomes — the Healthgrades ratings provide critical feedback for both patients and hospitals. By offering easy access to objective performance measures, Healthgrades gives consumers the information they need to find a hospital that excels in providing the care they need.  And, by shining a light on strengths and weaknesses, the Healthgrades ratings help direct hospitals to opportunities for clinical improvement. The 2024 hospital assessment evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 35 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top performers.

“Healthgrades congratulates Portsmouth Regional Hospital for being a national leader and demonstrating a deep commitment to providing high-quality care to all patients,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “As health systems nationwide endeavor to elevate the quality of care, these elite facilities provide a roadmap for success. We commend Portsmouth Regional Hospital for their dedication to excellence in patient care.”
