Pulmonary Function Testing

Pulmonary function tests, including pulmonary stress tests, are breathing tests that indicate how well your lungs work— how much air your lungs can hold, how much air you can blow out and how hard you can blow air out.

Comprehensive Pulmonary Evaluation

The highly skilled respiratory care professionals at Portsmouth Regional Hospital offer a full range inpatient and outpatient pulmonary tests, including:

  • Spirometry – Evaluates functional lung capacity compared to normal capacity
  • Lung volume measurement – Determines total lung size to help distinguish among types of lung disease
  • Diffusion study – Evaluates the ability of the lungs to move oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the blood
  • Methacholine/bronchial challenge – Aids in diagnosis of reactive airway disease, which may occur after exposure to high levels of an irritating vapor, with symptoms such as wheezing and allergic reactions

How You Benefit

Pulmonary function testing helps your doctor see the lungs at work and provides important information for accurately diagnosing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or trouble breathing to determine the most effective treatment options. In addition to identifying the presence of respiratory diseases and changes in respiratory function, pulmonary stress tests help assess lung cancer patients for the capacity to undergo surgery.
