Portsmouth Regional Hospital (PRH), part of the HCA Healthcare network, has been named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery for the second consecutive year, putting it in the top 2% of cardiac surgery programs in the country, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. This distinction, along with numerous other accolades from Healthgrades including several five-star ratings being named a top 250 hospital in the country, reflects Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s outstanding clinical performance and distinguishes it as one of the country’s leading hospitals.

Other accolades from Healthgrades include being the recipient of the Healthgrades 2025 Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award and being a 5-star recipient for coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery, and the treatment of heart attack.

“Receiving this award from Healthgrades for the second year in a row is an honor, and a clear indicator of our commitment to providing patients on the Seacoast with complex cardiac care close to home,” said Brian Sanders, MD, chief medical officer for the Seacoast market of HCA New England Healthcare. “We are just wrapping up our 25th anniversary year-long celebration for open-heart surgery, and are excited about what the next 25 years has in store as we continue to advance clinical services with medical and technological advancements, including our new cardiovascular surgery operating room, which we expect to be complete in January 2025.”

Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and complications. By focusing on what matters most — patient outcomes — the Healthgrades ratings provide critical feedback for both patients and hospitals. By offering easy access to objective performance measures, Healthgrades gives consumers the information they need to find a hospital that excels in providing the care they need. And, by shining a light on strengths and weaknesses, the Healthgrades ratings help direct hospitals to opportunities for clinical improvement. The 2024 hospital assessment evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 35 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top performers.

“Healthgrades commends Portsmouth Regional Hospital for its clear commitment to delivering consistently superior patient outcomes in critical service areas, including cardiac surgery, orthopedics, neurosciences, gastrointestinal, critical care, surgical care and outpatient services,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s leadership, expertise, and unwavering dedication to clinical excellence set a high mark for specialty care in New Hampshire and nationwide.”
