Portsmouth Regional Hospital has achieved the American College of Radiology (ACR) Designated Lung Cancer Screening Center Accreditation. This accreditation was awarded after rigorous scrutiny by the ACR.

Low Dose CT lung cancer screenings have been offered at Portsmouth Regional Hospital since 2013. This offering is in response to recommendations from organizations such as the United States Preventative Task Force and the American Cancer Society’s recommendation for screening of individuals with a significant smoking history.

Early detection remains the key to better outcomes. Tobacco smoking remains the primary cause of lung cancer, although anyone---even non-smokers--- can contract the disease from some combination of genetics, radon or asbestos exposure, air pollution or secondhand tobacco smoke. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation or a combination of options.

Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s multispecialty approach means a dedicated team of diverse clinical professionals---such as medical oncologists and pulmonologists---provides individual attention and maps a plan of treatment, recovery and follow-up, tailored to individual needs.
