When it's time to give birth, you'll welcome your baby in a calm, soothing environment. We offer:

  • A private and peaceful experience. Our newly renovated birthing suites allow you to labor your way with support from your caregiver and support person. Enjoy tranquil accommodations featuring tubs for hydrotherapy, low lighting, aromatherapy, massage and private bathrooms.
  • A welcoming, family-centered setting. With snacks available in our family kitchen and overnight sleeping accommodations for your partner, your family will feel at home throughout your labor and delivery.
  • A medical team ready for anything. Our team is equipped with the latest obstetric technology and resources, including wireless fetal monitoring, on-site anesthesiologist and a dedicated operating room for unplanned or emergency cesarean sections. We also offer a variety of alternative pain management techniques.
  • Level II NICU. A Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) -- also known as a special care nursery --provides specialized care for babies born at or after 34 weeks, or those with moderate medical issues. If your baby requires more advanced care, we offer seamless access to higher-level NICUs.

Our birth doulas provide compassionate, holistic support throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery and the postpartum period. Postpartum care

After your baby is born, we provide the postpartum care and support you need for a healthy recovery and smooth transition into life with your newborn. Our postpartum care team is here for you during your hospital stay and in the weeks after you return home. We practice couplet care, or rooming in, so you and your partner/support person can get to know your baby in a private setting. We also offer screening for postpartum depression and provide counseling resources to support your emotional well-being – helping ensure a healthy, happy and safe transition into your new family dynamic.

We know how important it is to document such a special time in your life. This is why we partner with a local photographer to offer professional photography, available for purchase if you wish.

Meet Your Perinatal Nurse Navigator

At Portsmouth Regional Hospital, you’ll have the support of a Perinatal Nurse Navigator. Her expertise in pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period will ensure that your perinatal journey is personalized, well-informed and as stress free as possible.

Our nurse navigator plays a crucial role in educating expectant families by offering a prenatal intake visit and tour, as well as the option to attend one (or all!) of our many classes including Childbirth Education, Baby Basics, Breastfeeding Basics, as well as Mindful Birth and Comfort Measures.

Our Level II NICU

Our Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), also known as a special care nursery, is equipped to care for babies born prematurely (as early as 34 weeks) and those with related medical conditions such as low birth weight and feeding difficulties.

While our hope your newborn won’t need these additional services, you can rest easy knowing that we are able to provide your newborn with advanced care should it be necessary. If your baby requires a higher level of care, we work with advanced tertiary care NICUs to ensure you and your baby receive the specialized care and support you need.
