Pulmonary rehabilitation helps you maximize your quality of life by learning to manage lung conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic asthma, cystic fibrosis and interstitial lung disease or pulmonary fibrosis.

Expert Respiratory Rehab in the Seacoast

Take advantage of the Second Wind pulmonary rehabilitation program at Portsmouth Regional Hospital to help you stabilize or reverse symptoms of chronic lung disease. Our program is accredited by the American Academy of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and recognized by the American Thoracic Society as the standard of care for moderate to severe lung disease.

How You Benefit

Our multispeciality team of professionals evaluates your needs and tailors a therapy program to fit your specific situation—improving your ability to breathe easier every day. Because inactivity can worsen breathing issues, exercise is a key component of the program. We monitor your health and offer support, education and resources to help you:

  • Exercise safely and improve upper body strength
  • Learn techniques for more comfortable breathing
  • Conserve your energy
  • Take your medication and use oxygen effectively
  • Improve your overall nutrition, self-esteem and level of independence
  • Stop smoking
  • Reduce anxiety, depression and the need for hospitalization
  • Enhance your range of daily activity and quality of life

Preparing for Your Second Wind

Before you can begin the program, you may need a breathing test if you haven't completed one recently. We'll also schedule you for an assessment and orientation session, including a supervised walk test, to help us establish your eligibility and identify your specific needs, so we can tailor a program to fit your specific situation. At the end of the program, you'll repeat the health assessment and supervised walk test to measure your improvement.

Cost and Insurance

Many insurance carriers cover the cost of pulmonary services. You may be responsible for a co-payment. Review your policy or ask your insurance company about pre-program certification and/or reimbursement.

Our program fee includes interval training, education, oxygen saturation monitoring and the personal attention of our expert staff. If you're eligible for Medicare, a percentage of the cost is covered.

Graduation

When you complete the program, we'll celebrate your success with a certificate of achievement. In addition, you and your physician receive a report outlining your progress.
